Ways to Make Money from Home: 20 Things to Try Today

July 21, 2016 by hewella1 1 Comment

We are all looking for easy ways to make money from home. I have tried a lot of different ways to earn extra cash to help support my family. Some have worked and some have failed.

The good news is that there are so many ways to make money from home that there is something for everyone and every lifestyle.

You can work full time, be a stay at home parent, a retiree, a college student, etc. There is always going to be a way to make extra money from home.

Real ways to make money from home and earn extra cash online. Legit ideas perfect for moms, college students, etc.

I was able to quit my full time job so that I could stay at home with my daughter when she was born. I did it by making extra income on the side and doing a bit of frugal living.

What I love about making money from home is that I can do it on my own time. I work during naptime and after my daughter goes to bed.

I am able to still spend quality time with her every day and still contribute to providing for her.

I have compiled this list of all the ways you can legitimately make money from home. I have personally done a lot of these and I plan on doing more.

Pick the ones that you have time for and will fit your lifestyle and interests. Even if it is just an extra $30 per month, that is extra cash in your pocket!

Ways to Make Money from Home

  • Start your own blog or website

This is what I have done and you do not have to be tech savvy at all, I certainly am not.

There are so many free blogging courses and tutorials that will walk you through starting your own blog that it is so easy to do. I am currently making about $2,000 per month just from my blog and I work on it about 2-3 hours per day.

I have an entire section dedicated to blogging so check that out for more info.

Est. Earnings: $2,000+ per month

  • Take Surveys

You either love them or hate them but taking surveys can bring in an extra $50 per month for each site you are active on.

Last year I made $500 with survey sites and I really didn’t do a whole lot of them. I would do about an hour a week taking surveys while I watched TV.

My favorite ones are: Global Test Market, Inbox Dollars, Pinecone Research, and Vindale Research.

Est. Earnings: $50-$100 per month

  • Get Paid to do Online Searches

Sign up for Swagbucks and you can get paid for doing online searches ( that you would be doing anyway), watching short videos, taking short surveys, and more.

I would earn about $30 per month when I logged in everyday. You can cash out for gift cards to Amazon, Target, Starbucks, Walmart, etc.

Est Earnings: $20-$30 per month

  • Become a VA

You can become a virtual assistant and help people run their blogs, websites, or small business. I know a lot of bloggers that pay their VAs around $10/hr just for scheduling social media, returning emails, etc.

You can be a VA for several different people at once and make it a full time job. If you love Pinterest, look into becoming a Pinterest VA.

Est Earnings: $300+ per month

More Ways to Make Money from Home

  • Online Selling

You can become an online seller on Amazon, Etsy, or eBay. This is a great way to make money from home. I am an Amazon seller and I make on average about $500 per month working 1-2 hrs a week!

I know people that make this a full time job and it is amazing!

One person who does this is Jessica Larrew and she has some amazing training to help get your started. I love her Amazon Boot Camp it really walks you through everything you need to know to get started selling on Amazon. It is worth the investment if you are looking for the right way to get started.

Est. Earnings: $500-$100,000+ per month

  • Referral Programs

If you have a big social media following or just a lot of friends, you may be able to make some extra money by using referral programs.

You get your friends to sign up for a service or buy something through your referral link and you get a commission. Some offer cash and some offer store credit.

Est. Earnings $30-$50+ per month

  • Sell Gently Used Clothing

We all have clothes that we have grown out of or just don’t wear anymore. You can make a good bit of money buy turning your unwanted clothes into cash.

This is a good way to get rid of all the kids’ clothes that they have outgrown but are perfectly fine.

Est. Earnings: $30-$50+ per month

Less Time Consuming Ways to Make Money from Home

  • Focus Groups

I usually participate in focus groups every few months. It’s a great way to get out of the house and talk to actual adults instead of a two year old all day.

You just give your opinion to the researcher and you get payed when you leave. The average session lasts about 1-2 hours. On average I get payed $125 per focus group, one time I got $500!

Est Earnings: $125 per month

  • Put your Home on Airbnb

You can actually rent out your home for others to use as a vacation rental on Airbnb. This is great if you have a rental property or a vacation home that you don’t use a lot.

People even rent out extra rooms in their homes through Airbnb. How much you make depends on your location and what you offer but it seems that the average is about $1500-$2,000 per month.

Est. Earnings: $1-2,000+ per month (depending on location)

  • Rent out Extra Space and things you own.

If you have a garage, storage building, or barn you can actually rent out any space that you aren’t using to others for storage.

This is especially true if you live near a large city where people don’t have a lot of extra space. Others can pay you for storing cars, items while they are moving, etc.

You can even make some cash renting out things you own.

Est. Earnings: $50 per month

Make Money from Home with your own Small Business

  • Be a Superhero or Princess for Birthday Parties

This is a really good option for college students, preferably ones that are good actors! You can buy a good superhero or Disney Princess costume for about $100.

You can then advertise that you do kid’s birthday parties. I know a couple of people that do this as a legitimate business. You can easily make $100 per party, if not more.

Est. Earnings: $300+ per month

  • Tutoring

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to tutor, but you do need a good understanding of the subject and age range you will be tutoring. If you speak a second language fluently, be a foreign language tutor.

Est Earnings: $10-$15 per hour

  • Do Micro Tasks

You can join sites like Fiverr and Taskrabbit and get paid for doing things others don’t want (or have time) to do. Everything from running errands, shopping, technical services, making deliveries, putting together furniture, etc.

How much you make depends on the services you offer and how many hours you put into it.

Est Earnings: $2,000+ per month on Taskrabbit, $200+ per month on Fiverr

  • Start a Lawn Care Service

A lot of people want a pretty yard but don’t have the time to maintain it. If you have a lawnmower, you can start a lawn care service.

You’re not doing landscaping, just the upkeep. You could be paid $30-$40 per week for mowing and weeding a yard. Do 2-3 different yards, that’s $120 per month!

To get started promoting your service, I advise signing up for Nextdoor to see if your neighborhood is on there and start letting people in your local area know that you are offering this service.

Est. Earnings: $120+ per month

  • Dog Walker

Just like with lawn care, people don’t have time to walk their dogs throughout the day. This is a great option for people that live in large cities, too.

Est. Earnings: $10 per hour

  • Child Care

You could open your home to child care. If you are a stay at home mom and your child is a bit older, you may be able to watch one or two others throughout the day.

You could do it everyday of the week or just babysit at night or on weekends so people can go on dates.

Est. Earnings: $10-$15 per hour

  • Clean Houses

It’s not glamorous but it is another option to make money from home on your own schedule. You can clean homes for busy moms, the elderly, or the disabled.

Est Earnings: $25 per hour

  • Be an Uber Driver

If you like driving and meeting new people, you may want to become an Uber driver.

You set your own hours but you do need to be 21+, have 3 years driving experience, pass background checks, have a four door car that fits at least four passengers, and have a good driving record.

Est. Earnings: $13-$15+ per hour

  • Mystery Shopper

This won’t make you a lot of money, the average is about $8-$10 per shop, but you do get reimbursed for the products you buy.

You can join sites and get notified when there are new shops in your area. I even got a free massage through a mystery shop!

I will be adding to the list as new ways to make money from home become available. I’m sure there are plenty more out there and I will do my best to track all the info down for you.

Thank you for so much good information on this subject. So many sites are not legitimate so it’s important to know which ones are.
