Runny makeup is never a good look. That’s why I always look for ways to keep my makeup from melting in the summer. I hate when I spend the morning getting ready and then a few hours later I get raccoon eyes or my makeup is melting off my face.
I live in the South where I not only have to deal with the heat but the humidity as well. I’ve figured out a way to keep my makeup on point while still being able to go outside. I like using these frugal beauty tips to make my makeup last longer. The longer it lasts, the less product I have to use to do touch ups.
How to Prevent Makeup from Melting in Hot Weather
Start with a Clean Canvas
I’ve included some affiliate links in the post to help make your shopping easier. The first thing you want to do is make sure you get rid of any excess oil. In the summer, I like to use a moisturizer only at night so that it gets absorbed while I sleep and my skin isn’t oily the next day. In the winter I will use a day and night cream.
The first thing you will want to do is to get an alcohol-free toner. Put a little on a cotton swab and rub it over your face, especially the T-zone. This will make sure your face is as oil-free as possible and your makeup won’t slide around. I like the Neutrogena Toner for this step.

Don’t Skip the Sunscreen
Sunscreen is so important in the summer. I never skip it! Look for a lightweight and oil-free formula like, Cerave Sunscreen Face Lotion. I put sunscreen on before I put on any kind of primer. I usually let it dry for about 5 minutes before I put anything else on my face.
Use a lightweight Primer
You want everything you put on your face to be as lightweight as possible, this includes your primer. Use an oil-free formula like, Revlon Photoready Perfecting Primer, to really give your makeup something to bond to without feeling sticky.
Best Makeup for Summer Heat
Use a Powder Foundation
Just like we change our wardrobe in the summer, we also have to change our makeup. You need to look for the best makeup for summer heat and humidity. I usually wear a liquid foundation in the cooler months but in the summer, I wear powder foundations to keep my look from melting. Powder foundation isn’t as slippery and stays in place. Powder foundation is different from a face powder so make sure you get the correct formula.
If you are a fan of liquid foundations like me, you can try the L’Oreal Paris Magic Nude liquid powder. It goes on like a liquid but it dries to a powder finish. Perfect for the summer heat! Also, instead of using a liquid concealer, you can just apply more powder foundation where you need extra coverage.
Use Powder Blush and Shadows
Just like with foundation, stay away from any kind of cream or liquid blush or eye shadows. They are more prone to melting in the summer heat. Use a lightweight powder formula like, Physicians Formula Powder Palette Blush. It will give you a nice rosy glow without getting streaky.
Lip Stains will stay Put
The best kind of lip color to wear in the summer are lip stains and matte formulas. Most lip glosses and lip sticks are just too oily to stand up to heat and humidity. Look for formulas that say long lasting or long wearing. These are the ones that have staying power and are more of a sweat proof makeup. I really like the L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Gloss. It goes on like a lip gloss but dries to a matte finish for long lasting color.
Try not to use a lip liner if you can. Most of them are very oil based and can easily run. You can use a little bit of concealer to go around your lips to help it stay in place if you need to use one. Extra tip: Once you have applied your lip color of choice, take a little bit of face powder and lightly dab it on your lips to prevent makeup from melting off your face
Stick with Waterproof Eye Products
We all know the dreaded raccoon eyes! The summer heat makes my eye makeup run more than anything else. Stick to formulas that are waterproof or water-resistant. I personally, like the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner. It goes on easily and is perfect for people who don’t want to get rid of their liquid eyeliner for the summer.
If you are very loyal to your favorite mascara brand and it isn’t waterproof, there is still hope for you. You can use a Waterproof Mascara Topcoat. It’s clear so you just put it on top of your favorite mascara and it will give it staying power. I really like the one from e.l.f. and it is only $3!
Don’t Forget the Setting Spray
Once you have all of your lightweight, oil-free, and sweat proof makeup products on, you need to use a setting spray to lock it all in place. I really like the NYX Setting Spray, it is a #1 best seller and it is less than $8! It will give a matte finish and help keep the shine away.
Always Have Blotting Papers on Hand
You can do all of the above but when it is 100 degrees outside, you are going to sweat. I always like to keep some blotting papers on hand to gently dab away any sweat or oil on my skin. This really helps keep my makeup from melting in the summer. You can try using just a 1-ply piece of tissue to blot and it should work fine.
I like using the e.l.f Blotting Papers because they come in a cute case that stores easily in my purse and they are very affordable.
Make your Manicure Last in the Heat
Our nails don’t get off easy in the summer heat either. Use a topcoat with UV absorbers like Zoya Armor Topcoat. It will help your nails stay intact and have a glossy look longer. Keep a pack of wipes, baby or makeup, on hand to wipe off your nails after you put on sunscreen since it can dull your nail color.
If you have any other tips that you use to keep your makeup from melting in the summer heat, let me know. I hope that this puts you on the right track to looking fresh faced and beautiful at the pool and beach this summer!
