Cleaning your makeup brushes is very important. You are supposed to do it after every use, but I will admit that I only clean mine about once a week. I tried this DIY makeup brush cleaner and it worked great! My makeup brushes are nice and clean and I didn’t have to buy an expensive cleaner to get the job done. It’s one of my favorite frugal beauty tips and I used 2 ingredients that I already had in my home!
You will only need 3 things to make this DIY makeup brush cleaner:
- clear dish soap
- extra virgin olive oil. You can also substitute with hair conditioner.
- a small bowl
That’s it! I’m sure you already have all of these things in your house. The dish soap kills all of the bacteria on the brushes while the olive oil conditions the hairs. All you do is mix equal parts olive oil and dish soap together in a small bowl. I just swish it around until it is mixed and it should look something like this:
Then just take your makeup brushes, one at a time, and swirl it back and forth in the cleaner. The cleaner will start to turn brown from all of the makeup coming off of them. I then take the brush and rub it back and forth on the palm of my hand to get any excess off.
Then run your brushes under warm water, not hot, and rub it back and forth on your hand to get all of the cleaner off of the brush.
After the brushes are rinsed, pat them dry on a paper towel. Do not let your brushes dry upside down. The water can drip down and compromise the glue holding the hairs together. I take all of my brushes and gather them together with a hair elastic. I then let them dry by hanging them from my bathroom shelf but you can use any kind of hook.
Mine dried overnight and were ready to use the next day. It took me less then five minutes to get all of them clean. My brushes were clean and looked great!
I plan on using this DIY makeup brush cleaner from now on instead of buying pricey cleaners at the makeup store. This is a beauty hack that will save you a ton! Try it out and let me know how it works for you!
