How to Keep your Money & Family Safe Online

December 26, 2016 by hewella1 Leave a Comment

This post is brought to you by Kaspersky Lab and The Motherhood. All opinions in this blog are my own.

We live in the digital age. The internet can be a great resource and make our lives easier but it can also be a way for dangerous people to take advantage of you or your family. There are precautions that everyone should take when they are online and this is especially true when it comes to your kids and your finances.

It is always a good idea to stay vigilant and aware when you are online as well as continue to talk to your children about online safety. Things change every year so it is a good idea to have a family meeting to discuss issues that they may face online, especially the older they get.

Here are a few ways you can keep your money and family safe online. Use these to give yourself peace of mind.

Don’t click attachments or links from unknown sources

If you don’t know the sender of the email, do not click on the attachments or links that it may contain. This is a great way for criminals to get access to your computer.

Even if you know the sender, don’t click on a link that seems suspicious. If they don’t normally send you things like that, their account may have been hacked. This goes for any retailers as well. A lot of phony emails will say that the sender is Amazon or Facebook and you need to verify your account by clicking a link. If you are unsure if this is a legitimate email, just contact the company directly from their website and ask.

Set up Parental Controls

If you have young children or preteens, it is always a good idea to set up Parental Controls on their devices. This is a good way to limit what they see and how much time they spend online.

Remember to also talk with them about not giving out any personal information online. Social media sites usually make it a requirement for users to be at least 13 years old to have an account. This is a good rule to follow as these limitations are put in place for safety reasons.

Renew your security software every year

Make sure that your security software is up to date. This will help prevent a lot of problems. You can actually get a great deal on Kaspersky Lab core products. They are up to 50% off through January 10, 2017.

Kaspersky Lab is the world’s most awarded internet security and will protect your online shopping, connected devices and curious kids.

Here are just a few of the ways that Kaspersky Lab products can keep your money and family safe online:

  • Secure computers, smartphones and tablets with multi-device protection
  • Shop and bank safely with award-winning Safe Money technology
  • Protect, monitor and set limits for your kids online with Safe Kids technology
  • Stop webcam hackers from spying into your home
  • Confirm the security of your Wi-Fi connection
  • and much more.

Through January 10th, you can get 50% off Kaspersky Antivirus, Internet Security, and Total Security. It’s a great way to save money and still get great internet protection for your family.

Always Log Off

Always remember to log off when you are finished in your account. This is incredibly important to do when you are in PayPal, banking sites, etc. Try not to even log in to these sites when you are on a public computer or a public Wi-Fi system. Keep that for your password protected internet at home.

Have Strong Passwords

I know it can be a headache but try to use a different password for each account. Write it down and keep them in a safe place or put them on a password protected flash drive that you will always have with you.

It’s best to use both uppercase and lowercase letters with numbers and a special character. Try to make it at least 8 characters long and don’t include anything personal.

This also includes your username. Don’t use anything personal like your name, birthday, house number, etc.

Read this post to your family so that everyone is on the same page about internet safety. What are some ways you like to keep your money and family safe online? Have you had the safety talk with your kids?
