Worrying about your home can really put a damper on your travel plans. Our home is our safe haven and we want to make sure it stays that way even when we aren’t there. Whether you are going on vacation, traveling for the holidays, or just want to make sure everything is fine while you are at work, there are some simple ways to keep your home safe.
Don’t Post on Social Media
I know that it is tempting to post your vacation pictures straight to social media when you are having a great time. It is best to keep those photos and any mention that you are away from home off of those accounts.
Even if your profile is private, it is still a good idea not to let everyone know that you aren’t home. Thieves are smart and the first place they look is on social media to see if you have checked in somewhere else and won’t be back for a while.
Have Someone Watch your House
If you are going to be away for a few days, it would be smart to get a trusted neighbor or friend to keep an eye on your house. Ask them to get your mail, take the trash to the curb, and to just make sure everything looks OK.
If you are going to be gone for a week or longer during the summer, ask if they will cut your lawn. See if they can shovel your driveway in the winter. Thieves look for signs like these to see if no one is home and it makes your house an easy target.
Put a Delivery Stop on your Packages
It is always a good idea to put a delivery stop on any packages that you may have coming to your home. You don’t want them sitting outside for someone to just grab anyway. FedEx, UPS, and USPS all have options on their website where you can easily set this up.
Invest in a Wireless Home Monitoring System
I’ve looked into getting a security system for my house and they are very expensive! A cheaper and more flexible option is Notion.
Notion is an all in one, sensor that can tell you if doors are open, your sink is leaking, or a smoke alarm is going off, all from your phone. It’s a great way to keep an eye on your house even when you are not there.
The Notion system consists of the Bridge that you plug into the wall and connect to your WiFi. The sensors are small and circular and can be placed wherever you need them: by the water heater, under the cabinet, on a window or door, propane tank, etc.
It not only is a great way to keep an eye out for intruders but it will alert you to any water leaks that you may not have noticed or if the smoke alarm is going off when you aren’t at home. You will know who you need to call right away.
What I like about notion is that it is more affordable than a security system, it is customizable to your needs, and it is easy to install (in less than 10 minutes). You can buy as many sensors as you need and can use them anywhere.

Unplug Appliances
If you are going to be gone for longer than a couple of days, unplug all of your electronic devices. This includes the TV, computers, lamps, toaster, stove, etc. This can actually help save you money and it will keep your appliances safe from a potential power surge if you don’t have a surge protector.
It is so important to keep your home safe all the time but especially when you can’t be there to attend to matters right away. By doing these simple things you can have peace of mind and actually get to relax.
