“Hurry, Mommy!” my daughter shouts as she runs around our backyard. She loves to run and always wants me to chase her. She doesn’t realize that I can’t keep up with her like I want to. She doesn’t know that I have a “bad knee” that keeps me from playing with her the way she wants me to.
Living with knee pain is never easy no matter what age you are but it is made even more difficult when you have a toddler to chase after all day.
I have had knee pain since I was 14 years old. That was how old I was when my knee dislocated for the first time. It happened another time after that and then I had to have knee surgery at 15. Needless to say my hopes of getting a basketball scholarship where ruined.
I went through physical therapy several times but my knee just never got back to normal. It has just become a part of my life.
I never realized how much it hindered me until I became a mom. I always have to stay right next to my daughter when we are outside. If she is too far away I simply can’t catch up to her when she starts to run toward something she doesn’t need to be near.
I can’t run and play as long as she wants to. My knee pain is worse in the colder months so it is difficult for me to walk to the park or go outside and run around in the snow with her.
I know that my knee will only get worse as I get older. I was told that I will probably need a knee replacement before I’m 40.
I was always scared of having to get one but seeing how much my knee pain gets in the way of enjoying time with my family, it’s not so scary.
I’m prepared to talk to my doctor about my options once the pain really gets in the way and over the counter medicine and knee braces don’t help anymore. I don’t want this to stand in the way of making great memories with my little girl and one day, far into the future, with my grandchildren.
If you suffer from any kind of joint pain, you don’t have to suffer and sit out on family activities. You can “Hit Play” on your life and start doing the things you love.
Talk to your doctor about the different treatment options that may be right for you. You can find a physician in your area who can talk to you about potential solutions for your hip or knee pain. Find out more at TimeToHitPlay.com.
It’s important for me to find a solution for my knee pain. Not only for my physical health, but my mental health as well. I will never forgive myself for missing out on fun times with my daughter, especially while she is so young, that time goes by way too fast.
I am going to put aside my fears of surgery and talk to my doctor about my options. I encourage you to do the same for yourself and for your family.
