When I first moved into my home, I hated the ugly kitchen. I’m talking about flowered wallpaper and white counter tops, people! This was my first house so I didn’t have a lot of money to do a kitchen renovation. I wanted to share some cheap ways to update your kitchen without remodeling that I used in my own home.

If you are on a budget, just pick out what you can change on your own without hiring someone. I took down that hideous wallpaper and painted the entire kitchen myself. It took a couple of days but I saved so much money.
Money that I was able to put that towards other updates, like new appliances and decor. Just tackle the area that you really can’t stand first, and then go from there. You will get the kitchen you love in no time.

Kitchen Updates on a Dime
Paint the Cabinets: I’ve talked about painting the walls, which can really make over any room, but getting new cabinets can be really expensive. Instead of getting new ones, just paint or stain the ones you have as a great option for a kitchen update on a dime.
New Hardware: You can also update your cabinets by switching out the hardware on your cabinet doors and drawers. This was something I did.
There were cheap looking gold knobs on my cabinets and I switched them out for some pretty bronzed ones, I was going for a Tuscan feel. They look great and changed the whole look dramatically. Try to buy in bulk if you can to save even more on this easy DIY kitchen remodel idea.
Light Fixtures: This was another update that was very easy for me to do. Switch out any old and bulky light fixtures to give the room a fresh look. Bright fun colors are really on trend right now like yellow, teal, red, etc. They are a fun way to add a pop of color without going overboard.
Cheap Ways to Update your Kitchen without Remodeling
Add a Backsplash: I love the look of a beautiful backsplash behind the stove or sink. Using real tile can get expensive so if this still is out of your budget, you can find peel and stick or vinyl peel backsplashes that are easy to install and a lot less expensive. This is a great cheap kitchen update ideas that will have a big affect!
Paint the Countertops: Another DIY kitchen update idea that I want to do is to redo my countertops. I really want to try the Gianni Countertop Paint until I can afford real granite.
This is a paint kit that makes your laminate or formica countertops look like real granite! They come in four different colors so you can find the look you are going for.
Decorate: You can really change up a room just by getting new decor. Have a bowl of fresh fruit out for color. Add some new curtains, rugs, photos, or vinyl decals to add some character.
You can find some great deals at places like TJ Maxx, Home Goods, and Burlington Coat Factory. I like having fun and colorful utensils on the countertops or if you have the money, get one of the colorful KitchenAid Stand mixers to have out (I love the Aqua color!).
New Faucets: Instead of putting in a new sink, just change up the look of any outdated faucets. This is an easy fix that only gets expensive if you want it to. I love that there are so many different functions the faucets have now. I want one that comes on when you just tap it. That would make things so much easier when my hands are covered in flour!
These are just a few cheap kitchen update ideas to get you thinking. There are just so many things you can do yourself and you can do them over time. Don’t try to tackle everything at once because you will get burned out.
Gradual change is good for you and your wallet. How have you updated your kitchen without renovating? Stainless steel appliances are the next on my to do list…just have to save up for those a bit more.

I love my painted countertops! The Gianni products worked really well for us. We also painted our cabinets, changed the hardware, and updated our faucet. And of course we painted the walls. It’s amazing how little these few changes cost compared to the big impact they have on the look of our kitchen!
I really like the idea of adding a backsplash. Thanks for sharing!
