How to Choose the Perfect Christmas Tree for your Home

October 14, 2015 by hewella1 Leave a Comment

It is almost December, can you believe it? Soon we will all be decorating for the holidays. That means Christmas Trees! Follow the tips below to help you choose the perfect Christmas Tree for your family.

I personally use a fake tree. I hate vacuuming needles every other day and I always kill my plants by forgetting to water them, so a fake tree just works better for me.

I know that some people prefer to have a real tree and I can’t blame them. The smell alone is worth it. We used to get a real tree every year when I was little.

I would always complain that it was too cold to go pick one out and it was a hassle to get it in the house and in the stand, but in the end the tree was beautiful and the smell was wonderful. I admit it Mom, you were right ;).

If you are going to be getting your Christmas tree soon, I have put together some tips on how to choose the perfect Christmas tree for your home.

How to Choose the Perfect Christmas Tree for You

Measure: Always measure the space you are going to put your tree. You will want to measure several things: The width of the area and the height from the ceiling down to the top of your tree stand. You may also want to take into consideration the height of your tree topper.

Also, measure the diameter of your tree stand to make sure you don’t get a trunk that is too big.

Freshness: To make sure the real Christmas tree you choose is fresh, simply take one of the branches in your thumb and forefinger and slightly pull. No needles should come off (or only just a few).

The branches should be flexible and not brittle. You can even tap the bottom of the tree on the ground and only a few needles should fall off.

Make Sure Your Ornaments Will Fit: A lot of trees are grown to be lush and full which is a good thing but not so much for your ornaments. To choose the perfect Christmas tree, make sure there is a little space in between the branches so that your ornaments will hang straight and not at an angle.

Even better, take one of your non breakable ornaments with you so you can make sure there is enough space in between the branches.

Check the Tree for Unwanted Guests: Before you put your tree on your vehicle, look over the inside of the tree for anything you don’t want in your home.

There have been a couple years we had a “Christmas mouse” in the tree. It was not fun trying to get it out of the house especially when you have a lazy cat like we do.

Use these simple tips and hacks to choose the perfect Christmas tree for your home. These ideas will help you choose the best real or fake tree for your family.

Take Supplies: Make sure you take your tape measure, gloves, and rope to get your tree. Unless you know the tree lot or farm has these on hand, it is always good to have them just in case.

I would also take an old blanket or tarp to lay down in the truck. If you are putting the tree on top of your car, wrap the tree in the tarp or blanket to keep the wind from blowing off the needles and getting sap on your car.

Keep it Fresh: If your tree is already cut, have them cut an extra inch from the base of the trunk. This will allow the tree to take in more water and keep it fresh longer.

Be sure to water your tree everyday. Never let the water level fall below the base of the tree or the cut end may seal over, preventing further intake of water. Here are 5 more ways to keep your Christmas tree fresh all season.

Those are some of my tips on how to  choose the perfect Christmas tree. Obviously, make sure the tree is not near any kind of heat source and always turn the lights off before you go to bed for safety reasons.

Let us know if you have any other tips that have worked for you. Hope you all have fun getting and decorating your trees!
