With it being summer that means one thing….bikini season! Is anyone else as scared as I am? I live in the South so it is hot and humid here all through the summer. I want to look good in my swimsuit but still get to enjoy some yummy and refreshing snacks to cool me down. I have some low-calorie snacks that are perfect for the summer. Plus, you will love them and so will your kids! It’s a win-win.
Fruit
One of the obvious choices is fruit. I love eating fruit in the summer. There is nothing like biting into a ripe, juicy piece of fruit to make it feel like it is truly summer. Plus, they cool you down and most are under 100 calories or less per serving. There is something that even the pickiest eater will love. My favorites are grapes (they are great to snack on when they are frozen), peaches, watermelon, strawberries, plums, and cantaloupe.
Not only are all of them tasty but they are great for your health. To make it fun for the kids, you can make fruit and cheese kabobs or just fruit kabobs with their favorite fruits. You can even make it look like a rainbow. Whatever works right?
Jello with Fruit
Something that is fun to make and eat is Jello. It’s cold and you can get it in any flavor you want. Most flavors are under 70 calories per serving. You can make it more fun and healthy by adding fruit inside. Let the kids help you decide what to add, they will be more likely to try something that they had input in. You can make it in a mold or in shapes, it is up to you.
Smoothies
I love making smoothies in the summer. They are easy and quick to make. You can make a smoothie for whatever reason: weight loss, detox, more energy. They are a great way to pack a lot of nutrients into your diet. If you are looking for inspiration, I highly recommend checking out Dr. Oz 100 Favorite Smoothies for Weight Loss. There are some great ideas to get you started.
Celery & Peanut Butter
They say that it takes more calories to digest celery than it actually contains. I don’t know if that is true or not but I like to think it is. I know that it is very low in calories and a great snack option. You can add peanut butter for some protein or use a dip to add some flavor. It is so refreshing on a hot summer day.
Chocolate Dipped Banana
You didn’t think I would get through this list and not mention chocolate did you? A good sweet treat is a chocolate dipped banana. You can cover it in nuts, coconut, sprinkles, whatever you are in the mood for. There is a great recipe for these at Eating Well and they are only 100 calories!
Fruttare® Fruit Bars
If you like your fruit a little sweeter, you can try a Fruttare ®Fruit Bar. They are yummy, refreshing sweet treats made with real fruit. Their strawberries, coconuts, bananas, and limes come from sustainable farms. They come in a wide variety of flavors so there is something everyone will love:
- Fruttare® Strawberry
- Fruttare® Mango
- Fruttare® Coconut and Milk
- Fruttare® Black Cherry
- Fruttare® Banana and Milk
- Fruttare® Strawberry and Milk
- Fruttare® Lime
- Fruttare® Strawberry and Milk and Fruttare® Mixed Berry and Milk (variety pack)
We personally like the strawberry and mango flavors in my house, they are only 60 calories. I love sitting in my sun room on a warm summer evening and enjoying one with my daughter. She loves the fruit pieces inside the bars and I feel good knowing that I am giving her a wholesome treat that she loves. She does make quite a mess, but she loves every minute of it and so do I. It is a great way to spend some quality time together.
I love all of these low-calorie options and I think they are a healthy way to treat yourself this summer. They wouldn’t be bad with a margarita either ;). If you have any other ideas for low-calorie snacks that both adults and kids would love, let us know. I would love to hear your thoughts!
