Decorate a Nursery on a Budget: Thrifty & Adorable Ideas

June 1, 2015 by hewella1 21 Comments

I know that a lot of parents are looking for ways to decorate a nursery on a budget. I remember when I first took on the task of decorating my daughter’s nursery.

It was a bit daunting and overwhelming but I think I did a pretty good job. It is cute, simple, and didn’t cost me a lot of money to put together.

I used these simple and easy ideas to decorate a nursery on a budget. Some great DIY tricks and cheap ways to create an adorable and affordable baby room.

I am not very crafty so I stuck with the basics. If you do love to craft, you can get a lot more bang for your buck.

The main thing I learned was to decorate not only for a baby but for a toddler as well. You don’t want to be redecorating every few years.

I hope these tips help you create an adorable and thrifty nursery so you can stay under budget.

Paint

Never underestimate the power of a good coat of paint. It can transform any room and it is not expensive at all. If you really want to make it last, go with a neutral color.

That way it can work if you have a girl and then later down the line have a little boy. All you will have to do is switch out the accessories. This can save you a lot of money and effort.

Changing Table/Dresser Combo

This is a great item to have if you need to decorate a nursery on a budget. Not only will it save you money, but it will help save space as well.

I love this changing table dresser and wish I would have gotten one. It would have freed up a whole wall in my nursery.

Convertible Crib

I think this is the best type of crib you can buy. It will save you so much money in the long run. A crib is not something you want to skimp on because your baby will be spending so much time here.

The convertible crib that I have can be turned into a toddler bed, day bed, and full sized bed. It will grow with my daughter and she can probably use it for 10-12 years.

When you buy the convertible crib, make sure you purchase all of the pieces that you will need. We had to also buy the toddler rail and rails to turn it into a full sized bed.

By the time your child is ready to transition to a normal size bed, the crib may be discontinued. Make sure you have every piece you will need and just store it away for later use.

Wall Decals

I love using wall decals in a nursery. They are inexpensive and add a lot of color and personality to a room. You can remove them and get new ones as your baby grows.

If you don’t like painting, this is something that might be easier for you.

Etsy

Etsy can be an amazing resource for decorating a nursery. They have all kinds of cute ideas.

You can even buy adorable prints that you can frame yourself to create your own wall art for under $20.

Mobile

This is a great way to add a pop of color to a nursery. You don’t have to buy an expensive mobile either. There are a ton of tutorials online about how to make your own mobile.

If you aren’t crafty, like I am, then you can always hang some colorful paper lanterns and create a cute college out of those.

I suggest hanging some over your changing table so the baby has something to look at. This helps them stay still for just a little while longer :).

Affordable Decor

When I was coming up for ways to decorate a nursery on a budget, I came across some amazing sites that had adorable home decor that was actually affordable.

Some of my favorite places were:

  • Ikea
  • Jane.com
  • Zulily
  • Target

I would check out Zulily and Jane.com weekly because they are always adding new inventory.

These are just a few of the ways I was able to decorate a nursery on a budget. I love using items that will last and grow with my child, they grow so fast!

Have the baby share with an older sibling. That’s saving money for us!

I’m going to keep things simple by using a convertible bed like you mentioned and a nature wall decal to decorate the room 🙂

Great tips my daughter just had twins and didn’t get a chance to do the nursery yet because they were born three months early! I’m going to send this to her she could really use some help.

Try to pick more of a pretty color scheme and not a “theme” that ways its not something that they will outgrow quickly

I love your tips! We’re currently working on our nursery for our little one who should arrive in late September. To save money on decorating, we painted and purchased items like a dresser/changing table on consignment. (Obviously, we didn’t skimp on the crib.) We’ve also put some of our larger ticket decor items on our registry/asked for them as gifts.

When my son was growing up, I bought fabric with a animal scene and made a large blanket to hang on the wall. That was inexpensive. 🙂

Ask others who’s kids are outgrowing their nursery if they have any items that they want to sell, donate or barter for.

Thanks for promoting this giveaway on my weekly giveaway linky (Tuesday).

Great ideas! We actually never had a “changing table” until our last baby. We always had counters near by that we used for our changing station. Thanks so much for sharing at #homemattersparty
