You know you should go to the dentist but prices keep going higher and higher. finding ways to save money at the dentist can seem impossible.
Did you know that people have stopped going to the dentist by 50% compared to last year? With the high cost of dental care and the lack of dental insurance it’s no wonder people have stopped going.
Even if it is unpleasant, it is still very important to visit your dentist at least twice a year for cleanings. There are some ways to make going easier on your wallet.
Here are my top 10 ways to save money at the dentist whether you have insurance or not.
Ways to Save Money at the Dentist
Payment Plans
Ask if your dentist will put you on a payment plan instead of paying everything up front. You can avoid paying interest on credit cards this way.
Family Discount
If your whole family goes to the same dentist, they may be able to give you a family discount. Dentists appreciate loyal customers so be sure to ask. The worst they can do is say “No”.
New Customer Discount
Some dentists will offer a discount to new customers. It may be a percentage off your bill or a free treatment with your first appointment.
Call around to ask the offices in your area. You may even find a dentist you absolutely love this way, too.
Pay in Cash
If you are able to do this, ask if you can get a discount if you pay the full amount in cash. Most dentists will accept.

How to Reduce Dental Costs
Dental Schools
This is great if you don’t have insurance. Get your treatments done at a dental or dental hygienist school. They are always looking for new patients and will offer free or really cheap treatments.
A student will work on you but they are supervised by a teacher. You can go here to find one in your area.
Look into Dental Discount Plans
For a yearly membership fee of $50-$100 you can get a Dental Discount Plan. You can get access to a network of dentists who have agreed to these discounted rates. You can go here for more info.
Stay Away from Chains
If you can find a dentist- owned office, they will be more likely to work with you on payment plans and discounts compared to a chain office. They don’t have to answer to a corporation.
Daily Deal Sites
It’s worth the time to check out daily deal sites, like Groupon, for discounted dental options. I have seen several deals for cleanings, exams, x-rays, whitening, and more for over 50% off the normal price.
If you are planning to go in the future, I’d suggest checking out the sites once a week to see if something comes up.
Know What The Procedure is Worth
You can actually look up typical insurance-paid rates in your area. Then ask your dentist to accept that amount, or even less, as a cash payment.
Preventative Care
Preventative care goes a long way. It is cheaper to get a cleaning twice a year then to fill cavities or get a root canal. Brush and floss twice a day and cut back on the sugary foods and drinks.
These are my top 10 ways to save money at the dentist. I would love to hear how you have been able to save or any tricks you may use.

My dentist gives discounts for interacting with them on Facebook, writing reviews, and referring clients. It’s small savings, but still adds up!
