Southern Style Slow Cooker Mac & Cheese

May 25, 2015 by hewella1

Here in the South, we love our Mac & Cheese. You really can’t go to a Pot Luck or family get together and not have at least one type of mac & cheese there. It is a true Southern staple.

We have a family recipe that I love but I came across a Southern style slow cooker mac & cheese recipe that I tried and fell in love with. I saw this on Trisha Yearwood’s cooking show and it it so much simpler to make.

My fiancé actually prefers this recipe over my “family recipe”. I love that I can just throw everything together in the slow cooker and just forget about it for a couple of hours. This recipe serves 10 so if you are just feeding a family of four, you will have plenty of left overs.

Here is what you will need:

Ingredients

  • cooking spray
  • 10 ounces macaroni, cooked. ( I use a little less than a 16oz. box of macaroni)
  • 12 ounce can evaporated milk
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • dash of pepper
  • two 8 ounce bricks of sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • Paprika, to taste

Directions

  • Spray slow cooker with cooking spray ( you could also use slow cooker liners).
  • Mix the cooled macaroni, evaporated milk, milk, butter, salt, pepper, eggs and all but 1/2 cup of the grated cheese.
  • Sprinkle the reserved cheese over the top of the mixture and then sprinkle with paprika.
  • Cover and cook on low heat for 3 hours and 15 minutes.

That is all there is to it. This is a favorite in my house and I hope your family loves it just as much as mine does.

I cooked it about 75% done. Then it finished in the crock pot, it was perfect.

I love this recipe and want to use it for big batches. How would the cook time translate to the oven for that??? Thanks!!

What size crockpot? Would 4.5 quart be big enough?

Yes, precook the noodles but not all the way. They will finish cooking in the crockpot.

Have you ever thrown this together the night before then cooked the next day? Was going to make for a work lunch function…. hoping I wouldn’t have to get up super early to throw together
