It is that time of year to celebrate the special women in our lives….Moms! This will be my first Mother’s Day and I am very excited ( and very appreciative of my own mom now that I know how hard it is to be one). You want to show her just how much she means to you but you might be short on cash. I’ve come up with a few ways you can show Mom just how much you care without spending a fortune.
Handmade Crafts: This is really great for the little kids. What mom doesn’t love getting handmade gifts from her babies? Seeing how much effort they put into it really makes it that much special. There are a bunch of cute ideas online.
Coupon Books: This works for kids as well as Dads. You can make Mom a coupon book for things like dinner, chores you will do around the house, even giving her the TV for the whole day. The possibilities are endless. There are some cute printables you can get online too. Just Google ” Free Mother’s Day Coupon Book Printables”.
Daily Deal Sites: You can get some great deals on gifts like flowers, sweets, jewelry, spa treatments, and much more on daily deal sites. Groupon has a whole section with Mother’s Day Gifts. You can also check out Living Social and Restaurant.com for deals over 50% off!
Photo Collage: What mom doesn’t love pictures of her kids? You can get a nice frame at the dollar store for a really nice price. Then just get some of your baby or kid’s photos and make a beautiful collage for Mom. You can even let the kids decorate the frame itself to make it really cute. This is great if she is like me and still has all her digital photos on the computer instead of printing them out!
Write a Poem or Letter: If you are creative, you can write Mom a poem or letter to let her know how much she means to you. This will be worth more then any fancy card you can get her because it will come straight from your heart.
Flower Seeds: This is for the Mom that likes to garden. Instead of buying Mom flowers, just buy her flower or plant seeds. Then you can help her plant them in her garden and spend some quality time together. You can get the kids to personalize a flower pot to put them in as well. This is a gift that will keep giving year after year.
Make Bath Salts: Instead of buying fancy lotions and oils, you can make your Mom bath salts or oils for cheap. There are several recipes online but here is a simple one I found from Martha Stewart:
4 cups of sea salt or kosher salt. Mix in several drops of an aromatic bath oil (available at bath and beauty stores) and, if you wish, dried fragrant plants, such as lavender or eucalyptus.
Give Mom a BREAK! Take over all the cooking and cleaning for the whole day. Let Mom do whatever she wants: read, watch TV, or just catch up on some sleep. If you are a Dad, take the kids out or watch the baby without going to your wife for help :). This really is the best gift a Mom could get in my opinion. If you really want to up the ante, make it a whole week!
It doesn’t matter how much you spend on Mom. What matters is that you show that you love and appreciate all she has done. Just spend some quality time with her and she will be happy. If you have any other frugal Mother’s Day gift ideas be sure to let us know in the comment section.
