Trying to get back in shape can be a daunting task, especially when you start to think about the costs associated with it as well. Buying the right food and equipment can get pricey. Luckily, you don’t have to spend a fortune on a home gym to lose weight and become a more healthier you.

When I started my fitness journey earlier this year, I was able to build a home gym on a budget and still get amazing results!
You really don’t need a lot of equipment to lose weight and get fit. If you eat right and do exercises that will target your problem areas, you don’t need to spend a lot on a home gym or sports equipment.
A lot of the time you can just use your own body weight to get results and see a dramatic change in your body.
Get the Basics
I personally don’t like to have a huge home gym with tons of different equipment because I really just don’t have the space for it all.
I keep all of my equipment in a box in my closet so that it is all together and out of the way. I do recommend that you invest in some basic sports equipment that most exercises and workout programs will use:
- Dumbbell set: I like having a variety of weights to use when I start a workout so that I can gradually increase the weight when the exercise starts to get easy for me. You can find a good set for less than $30 depending on the sizes that you want.
- Yoga Mat: You want to get a good quality yoga mat. Most workouts will require one, especially if you are going to do a lot of core work or yoga. This is essential if you have hardwood floors.
- Stability Ball: I like using a stability ball because it’s great for core and upper body workouts. They are fairly inexpensive but do check the review on the one you want to make sure it is good quality. You don’t want it to pop on you in the middle of a workout!
Choose the Right Workout
With the basic home gym equipment, I am able to do a lot of different workout programs. If you want to build a home gym on a budget, stick to workout programs that only use these items or nothing at all.
Like I said, you can do a ton of workouts using just your own body weight.
I personally use the Beachbody on Demand programs. I am able to stream any of the workouts I want for only $8 a month! That is a lot cheaper than joining a gym!
Most of their workouts don’t use expensive equipment except for the Beast program, that does use some heavy dumbbells.
You can actually get a free 30 day trial to try out Beachbody on Demand to see all of the workouts they offer and if it would be right for you.
Purchase Used Equipment
You may want more than just the basics in your home gym but don’t want to spend a fortune. Don’t count out thrift stores, yard sales, and sites like Craigslist or Ebay for some great deals.
People get items like treadmills, ellipticals, weight benches, and more that they say they are going to use but get rid of after only a few uses.
Most of the time they work great and can be a real steal. If you can, try it out before you buy so you will know if it needs to be fixed for a small fee or if it is a money pit.
Shop in January
If you are looking for some larger workout equipment but you don’t want to buy it used, wait to make a big purchase in January.
This is when most stores run deals on fitness equipment and accessories. Since people are making resolutions to be healthy this time of year, you will see a lot of sales.
Use What you Have
You don’t have to have expensive equipment to get a great workout. Just use what you have at your disposal. If you have a community pool, use it during the summers for some exercise.
Go for runs or walks in parks or on your neighborhood sidewalks. Play a game at your local courts or fields. Use your body weight.
There are just so many ways to get in shape without buying sports equipment.
I probably built my home gym on a budget for around $40. I shopped sales, bought the basics, and use workouts that hardly use any equipment.
As long as you stick to your fitness goals and stay motivated, there is nothing that you can’t achieve, even on a budget!
