Once you find out you are pregnant, everything can get a little overwhelming. Especially how much everything is going to cost! You have plenty of time (9 months) to get everything you need ready for the baby. But you only have a couple of months left to fit into your normal clothes. This is where you can go overboard buying cute maternity clothes for yourself. There is no need to spend a small fortune on clothes you may only wear for a couple months. Trust me, maternity clothes can be expensive but there are some ways you can cut costs. Here are my top 5 ways to save on maternity clothes:
Shop Early: Once I found out I was pregnant, I started shopping online and in the stores for maternity clothes. It was spring time and all of the winter apparel was on sale and clearance. I knew I would really start showing around Nov-Jan so now was the time to stock up on my winter maternity clothes while they were all on sale. Everything I bought was at least 50% off. I didn’t go too crazy, just a few shirts and a pair of jeans to get me started. When I did start to show I didn’t have to run out and pay full price for any of my maternity clothes.
Don’t Shop Trendy Boutiques: I know they can be really cute but clothes from maternity boutiques like Destination Maternity and Pea in a Pod can be super expensive. I found some of the best deals on maternity clothes at places like Old Navy and Target. They usually have sales and coupon codes that you can use online too. Another great online place to shop is Zulily. They have a whole maternity section with new sales everyday.
Buy Clothes You Will Wear After Baby Arrives: All of the maternity tops I bought look like normal tops, they just have some stretch or ruching on the sides to accommodate a bigger belly. I could wear these tops when I was only a couple months pregnant all the way up to 9 months. I can even wear them after I’m pregnant as normal tops and no one will even know that they are maternity tops. This way I really get my money’s worth out of my clothes.
Shop Your (and Your Partner’s) Closets: One of the best things I did was to look at clothes I already had. I only had to buy the basics to get me through my pregnancy. I would pair a maternity tank with a cardigan or sweater that was already in my closet. Cardigans are great when you are pregnant! I would also raid my fiance’s t-shirts to wear around the house or run errands, they were the perfect size once I got past 7 months. I would even wear one of this jackets when it got cold so I didn’t even have to buy a maternity coat for the winter (they can be really expensive!).
Check out Craigslist, Ebay, and Friends: People try to get rid of their maternity clothes all the time. Make sure you check out Craigslist, Ebay, Goodwill, etc. and you can find some great deals. Yard sales are even a great idea to check out too. Most people only wear their maternity clothes a few times so they still look brand new. Also, if you have any friends that just had babies, ask if you can borrow their old maternity clothes. I would have no problem lending out mine.
Those are my top 5 tips to save on maternity clothes. I hope they help all you new moms out there. If you have any other tips and tricks please let us know in the comments.
